1. Introduction of calcium carbonate

It is a white powder that is insoluble in water, but can dissolve in acid and produce carbon dioxide gas. We have calcium carbonate heavy and light based on the sources and density differences.

2. Usage

Food grade calcium carbonate is often added to various food and beverage products as a calcium supplement, pH regulator, anti-caking agent, or firming agent and so on… Here are some common usages:

Calcium Supplement: It is a nutritional supplement of calcium, which is an essential mineral for bone health. We add this ingredient to foods such as cereal, juice, and  snacks to increase the calcium content. Calcium content in this ingredient is very high compared with other calcium sources, approximately 40% (by weight). This means, for example, a 1000mg calcium carbonate supplement will provide approximately 400mg Calcium.

pH Regulator: We use this ingredient as a pH regulator or buffering agent in food and beverage. It helps maintain the desired acidity level in products such as fruit juices and canned foods.

Anti-Caking Agent: In powdered or granulated food products, this ingredient is used as an anti-caking agent. It prevents the formation of lumps and ensures a free-flowing consistency.

Firming Agent: It is a firming agent in some fruits and vegetables to maintain their texture and improve the taste, particularly in canned or other processed foods.

Fermentation Agent and Leavening Agent: In the baking industry, calcium carbonate aids in food fermentation and makes the food fluffy.

When taking this substance, some patients may experience gastrointestinal discomfort. In addition, some patients may also experience belching and constipation. Since it is a calcium supplement, it is not recommended for patients with hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, kidney stones, or a history of kidney stones.

Calcium carbonate is an antacid to neutralize stomach acid, alleviate symptoms such as stomach pain and heartburn.
